Stitching on Black Tutorial

There's something special about stitching on black, the colors POP so much more than they do on white. It takes a little bit of work, but it's so worth it!
We put together a little tutorial on how to get the design you want to stitch on black fabric.
(please excuse the bad pictures) the sun has been no where to be found this week :(
Ready?
GO

Materials you will need:
~ballpoint pen
~design you want to embroider
~black fabric bigger than your design
~transfer paper(preferably white)
~hard surface to trace on
~pins to pin down the design while tracing
~Hoop and thread
And your imagination!

Step One:
Iron the fabric you are using, so you can trace easily

Step Two:
Cut piece of black fabric that's bigger than your design, so you have more than enough room to trace and fit in your hoop

Step Three:
Cut transfer paper to fit your image

Once you cut the piece to size, place the transfer paper chalky side down on cloth

Step Four:
Once the transfer paper is chalky side down on your cloth, place your design face up on top of transfer paper and pin all the way around the border, so you can trace without anything moving

Step Five:
Now your ready to trace! Using a ball point pen trace over the outline of your design applying enough pressure to assure the image you desire. Check design often to make sure you are pressing hard enough and to make sure you don't miss anything.

When you are done tracing, make one last check that everything is traced before you move it and take all of the pins out. Once you do that you're ready to stitch!

Stitch away!

Things we learned:
1- We suggest you use a PEN, we started tracing with a mechanical pencil, it's no good
2- Choose your design wisely, everything will be a lot easier if your entire design fits in your hoop (there is less chance of your design rubbing off)
3- While embroidering try and keep your hands on the hoop and not on the design
4- If you choose an intricate design go over your design with a white stabillo after tracing to ensure nothing smears off

Hope this help all you stitchers who want to stitch on black!

xoxo

I need to try this sometime; so far the only color I've ever embroidered on has been white.

Thanks for the tips! I am working on embroidering big white calla lilies on a huge piece of black linen ( 2 yards long) and my chalk lines are rubbing off all the time. Wish me luck! Love your patterns and the blog, keep up the good work!
